Learn about Spaying or Neutering Your Pet With Our Veterinary Team

When you bring a new cat or dog into your life, you make choices that shape their future, including spaying or neutering your pet. One of the most important decisions is whether to spay or neuter. At River Grove Animal Hospital, we help pet owners understand why this surgery matters, not just for preventing litters, but for building a healthier, more stable life for your pet. Think of it like closing a gate before trouble gets a chance to walk through.

What Spaying and Neutering Mean

Spaying is the surgical removal of a female pet’s reproductive organs. Neutering (also called castration) is the removal of a male pet’s testicles. These are routine procedures that veterinarians perform regularly. They’re usually done under general anesthesia, with pain control to support recovery.

The surgery stops pets from going into heat or producing offspring. But beyond that, it creates important changes inside the body that lead to better long-term health.

Why It’s Recommended

There are several reasons vets suggest spaying or neutering, including:

  • Lower risk of disease: Pets are less likely to develop reproductive cancers or infections, such as pyometra or testicular cancer.
  • Fewer behavior problems: It can reduce roaming, marking, aggression, and anxious mating-related behaviors.
  • Longer lifespan: Fixed pets often live longer, partly because they’re less likely to be injured while roaming or fighting.
  • Fewer unwanted litters: This helps reduce overpopulation, which means fewer animals in shelters and fewer pets being put down.

When to Do It

The best time depends on your pet’s age, breed, and size:

  • Cats: Usually spayed or neutered between 4 to 6 months.
  • Small dogs: Around 6 months old.
  • Large dogs: Sometimes later (9 to 18 months), depending on growth and risk factors.

Our team at River Grove Animal Hospital will help you choose the right timing. Early isn’t always better, but waiting too long can carry risks too.

What to Expect Afterward

Recovery is usually quick. Most pets are back to normal in about a week. During this time:

  • Keep activity low
  • Prevent licking or chewing at the incision
  • Use any pain medications your vet provides
  • Watch for swelling or discharge

We give you clear aftercare steps, and we’re always here if you have questions.
